Great comfort food, and also amusing to small children. Easy to prepare, too. Enjoy!

One tolerably thick slice of bread
One egg
Some butter (1 tablespoon or less should do)
Salt and pepper, if desired

One frying pan
A spatula
One glass or cup or other round object with a diameter less than the width of the slice of bread

  1. Use the glass or cup like a cookie cutter to cut out the center of the slice of bread. Melt the butter in the frying pan.

  2. When the butter is sizzling merrily, fry both the slice and it's center. When the bread is nicely cooked (but not burnt to a crisp) on one side, crack the egg into the hole in the center.

  3. When the egg is mostly set, carefully flip the slice of bread over and cook the whole thing to your desired doneness. Serve and season to taste.
