This game was the first ever championship contest between the established NFL and the upstart AFL, with Green Bay representing the old guard and Kansas City representing the new.
The game was a close contest in the first half, with Green Bay drawing first blood on a 37-yard pass from quarterback Bart Starr to receiver Max McGee in the first quarter. The Chiefs answered with a touchdown of their own on a 7-yard toss from Chiefs QB Len Dawson to receiver Curtis McClinton. At halftime, the score stood at 14-10 in Green Bay's favor.
The Chiefs lost steam after the halftime break, however, and Green Bay scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to put them on top, 35-10.
Attendance for this first championship game was 61,946.
Bart Starr was named the MVP for the game. The Packers each received $15,000 and the Chiefs $7,500, which at the time set a record for a single game payout.
Vince Lombardi was head coach for the Packers, while Hank Stram coached the Chiefs.
