The Surface Transportation Board was created in 1995 under provisions in the Interstate Commerce Act. It is an independent agency but is affiliated with the US Department of Transportation. It is basically the federal oversight board for the US rail road industry. Their specific areas of over sight are:
- Rail Road Rates
- Rail Service Issues
- Rail Road Mergers
