TIE Advanced

AKA "TIE Avenger", the T/A is used by the Imperials in Star Wars. It is the first Imperial fighter to have shields. It also offers ion cannons and the ability to hold missiles or other warheads. Has a hyperdrive unit.

If everything else was equal, in a battle of an X-Wing vs a T/A, the T/A would probably win. However, if it was something like 6 vs 6, the X-Wings would win.

I may be mistaken, but I'm fairly sure that the Tie Avenger and the Tie Advanced are two separate ships. A Tie Advanced has 3 panel arcs at the end of the wings, which are flat in the front and the back. The Tie Avenger has points coming off of the front of the top and bottom panels of the wing, creating what almost appears to be a meat skewer on the front end of each wing. The Tie Advanced is very close to a Tie Interceptor with the small addition of a hyperdrive engine. The Tie Avenger does not contain hyperdrive.

The TIE Advanced (TIE/ad) was developed by Darth Vader before the Battle of Yavin, (as TIE Advanced x1) and he flew a prototype prior to the destruction of the Death Star. This craft is a version of the TIE Fighter based on the TIE Advanced x1 prototype, and was the precursor to the TIE Interceptor. The Avenger's wings were bent inward at the top and bottom, and the wing supports were strengthened with fins attached to the hull. It also has deflector shields and a hyperdrive, which significantly added to its cost. It's popular for high profile missions, but usually it is replaced by the TIE Interceptor due to its cost.

Aside from the prototype x1, there is only one model of this craft.

Because of its extensive features, the "Avenger" is now much more widely used than it was when it first was introduced. Long before the Battle of Endor, the Empire decided to pull the TIE Advanced X1 model completely out. However, the designers of the TIE Advanced X1 were puzzled over how Vader's ship had survived a collision with another fighter. One of the reasons, apart from the shield generator and heavy armor, was the wing shape, which was curved. This wing shape made the ship stronger, and so it was adapted for both the TIE Interceptor and TIE Bomber, both of which were introduced before the Battle of Hoth, but after the Battle of Yavin.
