Located beside Japan's quintessential holy place, Fujiyama, Taisekiji is the main temple for the Japanese Buddhist sect Nichiren-Sho-shu, one of the most significant subdivisions within Nichiren Buddhism.
Until the 1990s, when Nichiren-Sho-shu broke with its "daughter" organisation, Soka Gakkai, Taisekiji was also an important place of pilgrimage for Soka Gakkai members. Following the break between the two organisations, Soka Gakkai members have been banned from the temple, and the future status of the temple in this regard remains uncertain.
The temple's main claim to fame is the fact that it preserves an autograph mantra by Nichiren himself.
