You find this phrase on a lot of James Brown songs, and songs that want to emulate James Brown. You see, James Brown had a very fluid style of composing. Often, his songs were based on riffs, and he would call out changes, sometimes improvised changes, in the midst of a performance or recording. "Take me to the bridge," or some version thereof, is one of his more frequent exclamations, along with "Maceo!" and "Give me one!" ... or "...two" or "...three" or "...four!" The number corresponds to the number of "hits" to be delivered from his horn section over the rhythm section's riff. This last one is often heard while he is "breaking it down."
