Tanglewood is the summer home of the
Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). The
Tanglewood
Music Center is in western
Massachusetts
in the
Berkshire Hills. There is a program which
runs along with the BSO's performances, which includes
summer schools for
young musicians and
classes and
recitals with chamber and vocal music.
They also have a jazz concert, a performance by the
Boston Pops, some popular music shows,
and young musicians' concerts.
The first summer concerts by the BSO in the Berkshires
were given in 1936. The following winter, the Tappan family
donated some land to create Tanglewood. In 1940 the
music center began in earnest. In recent summers, more
than 300,000 people attend Tanglewood for the concerts
and masters' lessons.
