Texas is rightfully proud of their songwriters, who keep alive a pre-Nashville sound country music, still informed by Western Swing and norteño. Unlike the earlier "outlaw' fraternity (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Jeff Walker) that gained popularity on country radio, these musicians are mostly ignored by Nashville. They are often better known as songwriters, although command a loyal following in their home state and in the niche Americana market. Examples: Terry Allen, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, Jr., Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Tish Hinojosa, Nanci Griffith, Townes Van Zandt.
