The Chaos first appeared in Drop Your Foreign Accent - Engelse Uitspraakoefeningen by G. Nolst Trenite, in 1926. It has skulked in the shadows ever since, popping up here and there. It gained a half-baked kind of fame with the event of the internet. It is often appears in email forwards and humor sites, although usually only a small part of it is given, and it has been given many different names. 'English is Tough Stuff' seems to be the most popular title these days.

The Chaos is a poem making fun of the English spelling system, and best of all, it is quite factual in every way and part. This guy died before the internet was born, and yet his words live on -- few words so famous and true have been laughed off so completely. You are encouraged to try to read it out loud.

Dr. Gerald Nolst Trenite (1870-1946), a Dutch journalist.

And there are other variations -- some versions drop out certain words, sometimes there are multiple possibilities for a word's starting consonant (or consonant group). If any one has what they know to be the original version, I could use some help.
