There are touchstones from Neal Stephenson's book "Snow Crash." An early version of the Metaverse makes an appearance in this. The story seems to be set in a very contemporary time- seemingly just a few years in the future.
The story is basically about how a pair of brothers turn an ad campaign for a new form of currency into a whole new Internet-based economy which is untaxable (not to be confused with "non-taxable") and untraceable, perfectly secure. A savvy reader will learn a lot about how new economies develop and how old ones fail, to say nothing of where Microsoft is headed with the X-Box.
