An early April observation...the thing with the second wave is there are just too many things busting out in bloom to count BUT I'll try.
First, say good bye to the snowdrops and crocuses. Even the earliest of the daffodils are now fading. Winter witch hazel is about done and the pussy willow is in the puffy pollen phase. I've even seen the first dandelion seedhead puffball. Juncos and Purple Finches are heading north. White Throated Sparrow song is gone for the year.
In grassy fields the chickweed/speedwell/hensbit triumvirate
wild geraniums
violets
dandelions
ants!
And on the forest floor
spring beauty
bloodroot
salamanders!
In cultivated gardens .... "mid-season" daffodils now
a few tulips
hyacinth
scillia
muscari
periwinkle
butterflies and bumbles!
Up off the ground forsythia and quince joined by almond
sparrows!
In the forest spice bush scents the air
while sweet shrub blooms by farm house doors.
Higher still,
cherries
and Calgery pears
join the earliest magnolias.
woodpeckers drum!!
Can pink apple blossoms and yellow mustard be far behind? Just look...redbud!!!!!
