One of the two great epic cycles of ancient Greece (the other one being the Trojan Cycle).

The cycle was composed of many epic poems, and centers around the mythic history of the city of Thebes, from its founding by Cadmus, through the birth if Dionysus and the killing of Pentheus, the tales of Oedipus and his family and until the stories of the Seven against Thebes and Antigone.

Unlike the poems in the other great cycle, none of the poems of this cycle survived, but we have much evidence from later poets and playwrights as to the contents of the poems as they used the stories as themes for their plays and poems.
