A short story by Isaac Asimov about scientists who discover how to bring objects from the past into a "Statis" field in the present. If the objects are removed from the Statis field, vast amounts of energy will be consumed. Also, it is easier to reach into the distant past than the nearer past. The scientists have just progressed from bringing dinosaurs and prehistoric rocks to bringing a Neanderthal child. His nurse, Miss Fellowes, comes to love him and to resent him being treated as an experimental animal rather than a child, until eventually she has to try to stop her superiors from sending him back to his own time.
