A common sentiment among monotheists. This sentiment, as far as I know, arose first when Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaton decided that Aton was the only god. It could be that this is where the Semitic people picked up the idea, and brought it with them in their Exodus, and since Christianity and Islam are derived from Judaism, this sentiment may have thus spread throughout the world.
