This is one of the most horrifying ideas I can think of: what if, one day, I die, and there is nobody there to shed a tear? Nobody there to remember? If someone were there to shed a tear, at least I would be preserved in some form of memory, if only for a fairly brief time. But if nobody remembers, and nobody cries, then won't I simply be lost for the rest of eternity to the awful Nothing?

This same idea is applicable to humanity. What if humanity is dies before it finds some way to preserve its memory? The Earth might as well have never been. You and I might as well have never been.
