a villanelle against prolonged grief

To kill persistent tears, befriend sunlight.
Its tendrils strangle every shade of grey.
Allow the pain to wither like a blight.

Do not attend to those who deem grief trite.
Grief left unpurged will waste the soul away.
To kill persistent tears, befriend sunlight.

The fearful ones among us lose the fight
By shielding grief from healing light of day.
Allow the pain to wither like a blight.

The sun's astringent blessing dries the site
Where grief, that cancer, silently holds sway -
To kill persistent tears, befriend sunlight.

Deluded dreamers swathe their hurt in night
Not knowing darkness stalls the grief's decay.
Allow the pain to wither like a blight.

And though the grief has coiled itself noose-tight -
And though the tears seem permanent today -
Allow the pain to wither like a blight.
To kill persistent tears, befriend sunlight.
