The name of the chocolate Toblerone is a combination of the word Tobler, which was the surname of its creator, and the word Torrone, which is Italian for honey-almond nougat

Toblerone was created in 1908 by Swiss Theodor Tobler and his cousin Emil Baumann. Theodor's father Jean Tobler was also a chocolatier in Bern, where he owned a chocolate factory. The familiar triangular shape was there from the beginning and the chocolate was patented in 1909. The triangular shape, allegedly after the mountain Matterhorn, is a registered trademark.

All Toblerone bars, which come in several sizes and lengths, are manufactured outside Bern, Switzerland. One days production equals approximately 280 km - 175 miles - of Toblerone standard 100 grams bars. 90% of the chocolate is exported and after tobacco and alcohol products, Toblerone is the most sold brand name in duty free shopping

Toblerone is available is the following variants:

  • Classic almond-honey milk chocolate, in yellow packaging, 1909
  • Semi-sweet dark chocolate - i.e. no milk, black packaging, 1969
  • White chocolate - i.e. no cocoa mass, white packaging, 1973
  • Honey- and nougat-filled chocolate, blue and white packaging, 1996

Note: When sold duty free, the standard milk chocolate Toblerone is sold in a golden packaging.
