An infection with the Toxoplasma gondii organism. Generally acquired through contact with cat feces or at birth from the mother, which is why pregnant women must take very special care to wash their hands while changing kitty litter, or better yet, get the father to do it. :) Usually symptomless in adults, but very dangerous to babies: it can cause stillbirth or severe organ or nervous system damage. Less commonly, it can cause damage to the retina, which is treated with a course of steroid drugs. People with AIDS frequently pick up this infection.
