Turlock, California is around twenty minutes south of Modesto and an hour and a half east of San Francisco, in the San Joaquin Valley.

The signs all say "Welcome to Historic Turlock," but this is a cunning lie; in fact, the only thing that appears to be of historic significance in the town are the olde world street lights, which were installed less than two years ago. There's a Museum of Turlock, but it's an empty storefront.

Many of the locals refer to it as Cow Town; indeed, agriculture is big business here, and the most important attraction in the vicinity is the Hilmar Cheese Factory, the largest cheese factory on Earth.

Despite a population of over 50,000 people, a Wal-Mart, a Target and a seemingly endless string of fast food franchises, Turlock only just received its first bookstore (a Borders).
