People who make typefaces for a living. It's harder than it looks. It starts out fun with the vowels, and the ascenders and descenders, but by the time you've done the outlines for the hash and the semicolon... and that's before you even start on the kerning. It takes forever!

A couple of famous typographers are Eric Gill and Claude Garamond. And that Frutiger guy. Of course, any damn fool can make a font these days, but that doesn't mean they should.
