The predecessor to Interstate 5, in California it was decommissioned during the route renumbering in California to California Business 99 which goes from Bakersfield to Sacramento since this portion of the route was abandonded by Interstate 5. It used to contain the famous Ridge Route going thorough the present day Angeles National Forest near Castaic Lake and Pyramid Lake (Part of it is under the reservoir). It is the 99 referred to in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and is well known as the road that carried migrant farm workers through the San Joaquin Valley during the 1930s. It was decommissioned slowly and was pretty much nonexistant by the 1970s but in all 3 states portions of it are retained as state routes (Although for some odd reason US 99 signs exist in Seattle).
