The USS Ingersoll (DD-990) was a Spruance-class destroyer. I was on board for workups off of the coast of San Diego, California in the early 1990's. It was a double of the USS Cushing, and our helicopter detachment had a single bird to practice with the crew as they went through drills and training.
The Ingersoll had the absolute best tasting water of any US Navy ship I had been on. I have no idea how they were able to get it so crisp and refreshing, like it came from a clear mountain spring.
The crew was more friendly towards the airdales than most ships, and they seemed to be more positive. The ship was named after the former CINC in World War II, Admiral Royal E. Ingersoll.
The ship took two years to build and a year of workups before it was commissioned in 1980. It served in several hotspots around the world with distinction until the Navy decided it didn't want so many ships. Even though the Ingersoll was one of the newest of its class, they decommissioned it in 1998 and sunk it as a missile target.
