(Molecular biology) Untranslated region. The sections of an mRNA molecule which do not encode protein. Every mRNA molecule contains a 5' and a 3' UTR flanking its coding region, the part which is translated into protein. These UTRs serve largely regulatory functions, with the 5' UTR containing the binding site for ribosomes and the 3' UTR frequently regulating mRNA stability.
