In Irish/British politics, Unionist describes those who wish to retain the Union between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, viz. the United Kingdom, as opposed to entering into a united Ireland. The main unionist party is the UUP, led by David Trimble, although there are a number of smaller parties, not least Ian Paisley's hardline DUP, and the parties associated with Loyalist paramilitary groups.

Un"ion*ist, n.
