There are 10 United World Colleges (UWCs) all over the globe: Wales, Italy, Norway, United States, Canada, Venezuela, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, and Swaziland. The UWC movement was founded in the 1960s by Kurt Hahn, a German who had emigrated to Great Britain during World War II, based on the idea of bringing young people from all over the world together in order to foster international friendship and understanding. Students complete a two year course, called the International Baccalaureate (IB), and participate in social activities. Attendance is largely based on scholarships.
