UND is traditionally a national power in men's ice hockey, having won NCAA titles in 1959, 1963, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1997, and 2000 (and lost in the championship game in overtime in 2001).

North Dakota's sports teams have been the center of some controversy, as their team name is the "Fighting Sioux", which some Native American groups find offensive.

Interestingly, North Dakota's most famous sports alum is in the world of basketball, not hockey. Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson went to school there in the '60s.
