Van Dale's English proverbs and idioms

Van Dale is the Dutch equivalent of Merriam Webster or the OUP, the canonical lexicographer for the language. Their Groot Woordenboek Nederlands-Engels is the leading general-purpose Dutch/English bilingual dictionary, a fine work. However, when it comes to finding translations for Dutch idioms and sayings into English, it seems to have some very odd sources. The following potential nodeshell challenges are just a few of its gems:

• You must lose a fly to catch a trout.
• Everything has fallen into pie.
• It's an ill bird that fouls its own nest.
• An ape's an ape, a varlet's a varlet, though they be clad in silk or scarlet.
• A lie has no legs.
• Forbearance is no acquittance.
• Be not a baker if your head be of butter.
• One man's breath is another man's death.
• Golden dreams make men awake hungry.
• Where the hogs are many the wash is poor.
• A white wall is a fool's paper.
• Ill may the kiln call the oven burnt-tail.
• Old churches have dim windows.
