Literally meaning "The banners of the king of Hell draw closer." The first three Latin words are the opening lines of a famous hymn composed by Venantius Fortunatus, Bishop of Poitiers, in the sixth century. This phrase is uttered by Virgil at the beginning of Canto XXXIV of Dante Aligheri's Inferno, as he and Dante are entering Judecca, the fourth ring of the Ninth Circle of Hell.
