The IMDb lists his bio as:

Hill was born in Long Beach, California and educated at Michigan State University. He worked in oil drilling and construction in the 60s before becoming a 2nd assistant director in 1967. He has written and co-written screenplays, including several uncredited works -- "Alien", for instance. He has produced and directed films since 1975

But you might not know that he has made a lot of memorable films, like: The Getaway (1972, 1994), The Thief Who Came To Dinner (1973), The Mackintosh Man (1973), The Drowning Pool (1975), The Driver (1978), Alien (1979), 48 Hours (1982), Aliens (1986), Red Heat (1988), Alien 3 (1992), Wild Bill (1995) and Last Man Standing (1996).

So you know what you're watching, tense, stylish action movies, some recurrent actors and yer usual coolness. My favourite movies are The thief who came to dinner, and The Driver, with Ryan o'Neal (I would say that The Driver has influenced the game Driver in many ways); The Mackintosh Man and The Drowning Pool with an amazing-as-ever Paul Newman (the second is a Harper movie), Alien, of course and Last Man Standing, yet another Yojimbo/Red Harvest/A fistful of Dollars, this time on a 20's setting and starring Bruce Willis and Ry Cooder's guitar.
