One of the defining books on Artificial Intelligence. There are actually two versions of of it, the original and an update entitiled "When H.A.R.L.I.E. Was One, Release 2.0". Revolves around the life of a programmer/philosopher who acts as the mentor to the world's first AI. Also a good treatise on corporate politics, and the revelation at the end of the book is amusing, even if you don't agree with it. Written by David Gerrold.

David Auberson, the mentor in question was not a programmer/philosopher, but actually a programmer/psychologist, specializing in the infant science of computer psychology, developed because of projects like HARLIE itself.
