Sir William Macnaghten 1793-1841. Secretary in charge of Indian Secret and Political departments 1833-1839. Senior British representative in Afghanistan 1839-1841. Macnaghten convinced Lord Auckland that Dost Mohammed should be replaced by Shah Shujah. Macnaghten made several serious mistakes in his dealings with the Afghans, mostly related to his attempts to trick them. Helped to cause the First Anglo-Afghan War.
