violist of all time, studied in London and with
Eugène Ysaÿe, first violist of the NBC Symphony Orchestra, and formed his own quartet in 1938.
He turned the
viola from just another orchestral instrument into a solo instrument in its own right. There are many works written by English composers dedicated to him.
