Nicknamed "Pops", Wilver Dornel Stargell was born in Earlsboro, Oklahoma on May 6, 1940. The 6'4", 240-pound lefthander was the clubhouse leader of the "We Are Family" Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1970s, helping the Bucs to six division crowns and two World Series championships in the decade. Known for his tape measure home runs, Stargell slugged 475 home runs in his 21 year career, all of which were spent grazing the outfield for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

A 7-time All-Star, Stargell is the only player to be named MVP of the All-Star Game, the World Series, and the National League in the same year - 1979. He was inducted into the Hall Of Fame in 1988.

Stargell died on April 9, 2001 after a long bout with kidney disease, on the same day he was supposed to attend the ceremonies surrounding the opening of the new PNC Park and the unveiling of a 12-foot bronze statue of himself outside its left-field entrance.
