Wire services are news gathering and publishing organizations. Writers who work for them, called "stringers" write short news pieces and put them "on the wire." (The wire reference comes from the days of telegraph wires). Newspapers, television stations, and radio stations who are subscribers to a particular wire service can then reprint the stories in their own news broadcasts or newspapers. Not always accurate, however. See Associated Press or Reuters for examples.
