Wolf Hirschorn Syndrome

AKA: WHS
AKA: Wolf Syndrome
AKA: 4p- Syndrome
AKA: Deletion of the Short Arm of the Fourth Chromosome.

Cause:
WHS is caused by the deletion of the short arm of the fourth chromosome. The amount of material deleted may range from about 50% of the short arm to a small break that can't be detected by normal chromosome analysis. Because of the wide range of deleted material (1% to 50%), the effect on each child varies widely.

Possible Symptoms (Varies with the %deleted):
severe growth problems
mental retardation
microcephaly
"Greek Helmet" faces
cleft lip or palate
coloboma of the eye
cardiac septal defects
various other physical disabilities
