Work and thought are two radically divergent approaches to problem solving. If you just work at it, you are liable to find a kludge, which will be clumsy but good enough for now. If you choose to think, you can find more perfect and elaborate potential solutions, never tested because their hypotheses can always get abstracted to one more level of perfection.

The more you think, the less you do, until eventually you can spend all your time thinking and getting nothing done.
