The Wrecked Ship, part of the planet Zebes, as explored by Samus Aran in Super Metroid, revolutionary video game for the SNES.
The wrecked ship is an aeons old spacecraft which has long ago crashed into the planet Zebes. Although all life on board has long since perished, many robots and other automatic machines are still in working order, and once Samus turns the power system back on, a number of robots come back to life, many of whom are hostile. Naturally, as well as robots, there are ghostly forms of what is presumably the past crew.
Samus must visit the area so that she can obtain the Gravity Suit, which is necessary for some of the later stages in the game. The Gravity Suit not only reduces the damage taken by Samus (just like its cousin the Varia) but it allows Samus to move unhindered in water, which is very useful in Maridia, many parts of which are submerged.
The only area which can be accessed directly from the ship is Crateria (on both sides). To get into the Wrecked Ship, the Speed Booster and Grappling Beam pickups are needed - the speed booster to break through a wall just to the right of Samus' ship, and the Grappling Beam to get between the platforms built above the water. Since these items can only be picked up quite late in the game (unless you're one of these people who can do the secret moves like the bomb jump, in which case you can probably get there quite easily), because the speed booster is located all the way down in Norfair.
The Wrecked ship is quite a small level, as the map shows. However, the spooky atmosphere it provides is a nice change from the more action based areas in the rest of the game, and the robots provide an interesting bit of gameplay diversion (instead of shooting them, you can make them walk into pits which trap them) as well as some nice sprite scaling. While you don't spend much time here during the game, you'll enjoy it while it lasts.
