Much of the early GIMP development was performed by Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis in the XCF. Other notable XCF projects include the early web browser Viola, online map browser Xmap, the PVCS revision management software, and the Xtrek video game.

The XCF was formed in the mid-1980's from the remnants of the old Undergraduate Computing Facility and first acheived fame with their work on analyzing and stopping the Morris Internet Worm of 1988.
