Lunch with a former lover

from over forty years ago

He is balding, white-haired,

nervous, arriving early

After complaining about traffic

from Princeton, he asks

where I'd like to eat

with a quick mention

that the restaurant I chose

months ago when he needed help

and I was barely widowed

cost too much

probably because I had two

Bloody Marys with extra olives

and he said order whatever you want,

me, in trembling black heels

and black dress, believed him.
