This optical illusion is similar to the Herring Illusion, the Poggendorff Illusion and the Muller-Lyer Illusion, in that it shows distortion of lines because of their background. In this particular illusion, the vertical lines seem to be bent towards each other.

The surprising thing, to me anyway, is that the illusion seems to work quite well in ASCII... :)
