A short-lived Manhattan indie label, founded (circa 1979) by Michael Zilkha, gulped, more-or-less, by Island Records. Home of the idiosyncratic makers of rock - Was (Not Was) (with Detroit roots, the only ones not
directly linked to NYC scenes), No Wave bands Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (with Lydia Lunch) and The Contortions (with James Chance a.k.a. James White), Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Bill Laswell and Michael Beinhorn's Material, and John Cale. Great stuff; a cornucopia of originality and oddballness. Creole and the Was Boys went on to, arguably, bigger and better. Laswell certainly did.
