A type of sonar in which you actively send out sound impulses called pings and listen for them bouncing off of hard objects, such as submarines. While it has a greater range than passive sonar, the problem with active sonar is that it immediately lets anyone else with any kind of sonar know exactly where you are. Subs, sonar bouys, and torpedos have active sonar.
