Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) is a progressive, painful infection, also seen in subacute and recurrent forms. It is diagnosed by the presence of nasty lesions on the gums, foul breath, and increased saliva production. Additionally, a patient may wake up in the morning with crusted blood on the lips, and throbbing pains surrounding the front teeth. Many microorganisms are present in the lesions, and the diagnosis is often in its recurrent form, but it has not shown itself to be contagious.
