An altered state of consciousness involves changing one's perceptions and conceptual frameworks so one can apprehend mythic reality. One might alter one's conscious state through meditation, mystic practices, or sincere participation in religious ceremonies (Christian religions, Judaism, Islam, pagan, etc.) or certain spiritual philosophies Buddhism, Taoism, etc.). Some cultures lack the American segregation of mundane reality from mythic reality.

An altered state of consciousness may be induced by the ingestation of a psychoactive chemical, such as alcohol, marijuana, magic mushrooms or DMT. Each substance seems to have its own flavor of altered state.
