Ammonium bicarbonate is an ionic compound. It has a one to one ratio of ammonium ions to bicarbonate ions. Therefore it's chemical formula is NH4HCO3. As a solid, it looks like fine white crystals and has a slight ammonia odor. Its solubility is 17.4% @ 20°C (68°F) in water. Its melting point is 107.5°C. If inhaled, the dust may cause irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs. Ammonia vapors released upon decomposition may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract.
Despite being considered a mildly dangerous chemical, this substance is found in some foods. Like vegetable thins.
