A perplexing and somewhat annoying development in recent console gaming, originally brought about by the dreaded N64's toddler toy-shaped controller, most pads these days contain both a normal digital d-pad and a short analogue stick, which responds to various gradations in pressure rather than a straight on/off signal. Sony did one worse by putting two analogue nipples on their "dual shock" pads, each equally dubious in use.
