sonnets on envelopes &
haikus on paper napkins
small bundles of wildflowers
snatched from a roadside field
frosty hearts traced outside first story panes
& paperbacks left, persistent, on doorsteps
silly puns breathed into message machines
& sidewalks shoveled before dawn's early light

such a pity that once the eye is caught
the lures get tucked away securely
locked within your tackle box never
to be danced before her eyes again
as if you figure your fish won't jump
out of her goldfish bowl trying
to reach out for the first pretty bauble
that flashes just outside her window
