In American football, an "arm punt" is a slang term for a long throw by a quarterback that ends in an interception. The term explicitly compares this type of throw to a deliberate punt on fourth down, resulting in a switch of field position and a change of possession. The term "arm punt" is often a term of derision, used sarcastically to describe a badly thrown pass. However, in some cases, a quarterback with a strong arm might deliberately execute an arm punt on third or fourth down and long, especially if there is a chance his own teammate might catch it (however slim), and/or there are extenuating circumstances, such as a punter who has an injury. However, like normal punts, arm punts, if in fact intercepted, do carry the risk of a long return and even a pick six.
