An automatic mortar is a bastard cross between a heavy mortar and an automatic rifle. Instead of firing one hand-dropped bomb every few seconds it fires approximately one round per second. This uses up lots of ammunition but rains steel fragments on the target area. One Russian automatic mortar is usually mounted in an armored personnel carrier with a trailer towed behind for the ammo.
