That four sided thing in between the gas and clutch pedals in a car. Pushing it compresses a hydraulic unit, converting your foot pressure into hydraulic fluid pressure, which is sent to the brakes, which convert that fluid pressure back into mechanical action, articulating either disk or drum brakes. On most new cars, this pressure is aided by a power brake booster, so you don't have to stop the car by yourself. Dig it.
